I seriously feel like I just discovered buried treasure! May be old news to some, but brand new to me. And this is one of the reasons why I love blogs-uncovering new sources like a pirate scoring booty (and I don't mean tail). Today, I found an incredible source for affordable modern printed fabrics, which in my opinion, just might be the mother load. Thanks Elements of Style! It's not just for designers, you too can partake. The website is called Spoonflower and the fabric selection is A-mazing. I couldn't even pick my favorites because there were just too many. Here's a smattering.

Makes me want to decorate Little Miss Sunshine (our retro trailer) in any of the yellow patterned fabrics. The site shows pattern scale, color search, and coordinating fabrics to boot. Thoughts? I think my <3 just skipped a beat.

What's your Christmas style?

The decorating possibilites for Christmas can be more than your traditional red and green. I'm starting to see the injection of more creative combinations of colors with the standard Christmas tree, garlands, etc. A great way to incorporate your Christmas colors and style is through the ornaments placed on your tree or as accessories around the room, like an accent bowl on your coffee table filled with ornaments. Another way to inject your Christmas style and colors into your home is with your gift wrapping paper. Choose patterned paper or use a standard brown paper and wrap with colorful bows or ribbons. I've even seen patterns drawn onto the brown paper with gold or silver paint pens! A colorful pillow or throw is another great way to tie in the colors. I think a great centerpiece on the dining table also adds interest, and it doesn't have to be flowers! Think objects or even hanging something over the table or incorporate with your light fixture if possible. Last year I did a neutral Christmas with metallic accents. You can check out the pictures here. This year I've decided to go a little more modern and am using the metallics and neutrals with pops of lime green, hunter green, and turquoise. I'll be sure to post pics once everything is set up! I thought it would be fun to put together a board with a funky-retro Christmas style, and yes, I will be listening to the James Brown Christmas station on Pandora at our Christmas party!

I think most states have already entered into a season of Fall and temperatures have started to dip, sweaters and scarves are coming out, and leaves are starting to change. Here in Texas, we don't really have fall per say- we get some cold fronts, the leaves change a little... WE GOT RAIN TODAY!!! Since Thanksgiving is just around the corner, I'm feeling a little inspired by all things that feel Fall.

Office Space

Since transitioning into my own Interior Design business, I have begun to really focus on getting my office space together and organized! This is kind of a challenge because as of right now I am working out of my home to keep the overhead low. It's very easy to plop down with my laptop just about anywhere, and I like the flexibility (don't get me wrong), but I'm starting to have enough things going on that require me to really get organized and get a good storage system going. For now I will be sharing our upstairs loft area with my husband's drum set, oh joy ;). So it will be kind of like a play area/work space. I love a modern, clean aesthetic with some rustic, natural elements mixed in. I'm inspired by these spaces, found on my new addiction Pinterest.

We have a window seat area just like this in the loft, so I'd love to have a cushion made and throw some pillows up there to make it more comfortable and a space where we can hang out, listen to Merrick play the drums (with our ear plugs in), and work. And here's a quick design board I put together of what I invision our loft work space to look like:

Lifeworks Home Improvement Challenge 2011

I had the awesome opportunity to participate in Austin's 7th annual Lifeworks Home Improvement Challenge this year! My motto is promoting the wellbeing of others through the creation of beautiful spaces, so this seemed like a perfect opportunity to help someone else through design. Lifeworks specializes in helping young adults who have been homeless at some point, are single mothers, or are growing out of foster care. They give them the tools to succeed and some deserving clients apartments to help them get on their feet. I had the opportunity to design one of these apartments with the help of other volunteers from Dell. It was super fun and our client was thrilled with the results. The apartment was studio like in style, with the Living and Dining spaces being shared in one room, one bedroom for our client and her 20 month old daughter, and one bathroom. The mother (Tre) and daughter (Ti'yanna) would be sharing the bedroom, which I saw as the biggest challenge. Tre really wanted a space that felt relaxing and peaceful, and her favorite colors were lavender and chocolate brown. She also liked African motifs and texture, and candles. I think we pretty much nailed the design aesthetic (according to Tre) on our very limited budget! It was such a rewarding experience :) We also won the "Keeping it Green" award for our use of environmentally friendly products, sustainable materials, and repurposed furnishings. I definitely see myself doing this every year!

Lots to update on- first- I am now the proud owner of Christen Ales Interior Design, which means I am no longer working for the old firm Bulhon Design Associates. I am officially a free bird and open for business! I work in the Austin area, but would be excited to work on any out of town projects as well and have e-packages available. The website is almost complete, but for now I'd like to share some pictures of my own home. And they are Before and Afters (which I know we all love!) Enjoy! Overlay Magic!

I saw this on Elements of Style blog, and had to share (for those of you that don't read that blog regularly like me)! I thought these were so amazing for girls on a budget! What better way to dress up an IKEA piece of furniture or cabinet or wall- the possibilities are endless! Many of the overlays are already sized to fit IKEA pieces, but they also will do custom sizing. They are flexible and paintable. I hope to incorporate this on a project soon! Our console table is still in progress, but what is finished are our vintage x-base benches! I had the cushions reupholstered in a Pindler fabric and stained the bases a darker chocolate brown to coordinate with the fabric.

Here is the BEFORE:

Upholstered in an awful tan colored vinyl that for some reason was sticky with goo (I have no idea why)

The pair of these will sit under the custom console table we are building-I'm beginning the priming process to prep the table for the wallcovering, so it's in the works! Thanks for being patient!

We are tying up a few decorative loose ends at the Ales house, which is crazy because I don't really have any critical pieces left to shop for when I go out! My husband and I have this blank wall in our Living Room that at the very least needs art. This room also lacks lighting and the primary overhead fixture in this room is a fan with a small light that doesn't really do the job. This is ok because I don't like overhead lights anyways- I'm more about the "mood" lighting, which is provided by lamps. I thought it could be a good idea to do something a little more with the blank wall that just stick a picture on it, although we are doing that in addition to some other things. What we'll have is a console table that is open underneath with 2, x-base benches (that can be pulled out for extra seating), a pair of vintage lamps for extra lighting, and a large picture of my husband's photography. I felt like our Living Room already had enough wood and dark wood going on, so I wanted the console table to be a different material, lighter in color, as to not add too much weight to that side of the room. I also wanted the benches and lamps (which are darker in color) to stand out against the console table. I was inspired by some of Jan Shower's end tables that are wrapped in grasscloth paper and trimmed out on the edges with nail heads. I decided to go in this direction for the design of the console. Thankfully, my husband is pretty talented when it comes to carpentry, so he was able to make the table with the help of our builder friend Greg Brooks who has all the tools and the know how! Here are some pictures in progress...

What we did:
-Bought one large sheet of 3/4" MDF- I think it was 4' x 8'.
-Cut sheet down to pieces to construct the 60"w x 18"d x 31"h table. We glued/screwed 3 pieces of the 3/4" MDF together to create the 2 1/4" thickness.
-Next up: wrapping with the grasscloth wallpaper and adding the nail head trim...

Neutral-NOW!

I really love the calming vibe that neutral interiors give off. Some of you may think they are boring, and that's ok! If we all liked the same things, THAT would be boring! For those of you that like neutrals-this post is for YOU! I like the juxtaposition of calming neutrals with a little texture brought in through natural or ethnic elements and a little bit of modern. It's clean, but kind of rustic. Modern, but kind of earthy. Personally, I'd have to inject a pop of color somewhere for some more warmth, but I like the combination of materials and styles from these inspiration pics...

Orange Crush

As you've probably read or seen me post on my blog before, I have a crush on Orange. It's kinda of a selective crush though because I like it most when it's in small doses! A pop of Orange here and there mixed in with modern lines and neutral colors adds such a warm, energetic vibe to a space. I've definitely incorporated some of this into my own home, so I can't wait to share when I get it all finished. I have some other DIY projects to share as well, so stay tuned for that... Ok-so back to crushing on Orange. Here are some of my favorite examples of modern, neutral colored spaces with small pops of orange. Are you crushing yet??

Funkdafied Tiles

It's not often that you see tiles really being taken to the limit in colors and patterns in residences. I find that most people, even when doing a multi-million dollar home want to stay classic with the tile selections, which I can totally understand for resale value. I go back and forth between super classic, clean looking materials like Carrera and Calcutta marbles and travertines to more unique designed tiles or funky patterns created by the tiles- I honestly love both! Maybe you can get the best of both worlds by taking classic materials/colors and combining them in an unexpected pattern. Some tiles are available in the sizes you need to create your pattern, while others can be cut down from stock sizes to create your pattern. I would love the opportunity to do a more "outside-the-box" installation of tiles for a project! Who's got the guts?!

Laser Cuts are Cool

This is a little off beat for me, as I usually post pictures of pretty rooms, but I came across Molly McGrath, a jewelry designer/artist at the Renegade Craft Fair here in Austin a couple of months ago. After I left the fair and took the time to read the brochure I picked up, I discovered that she is actually a trained architect, which made me like her even more! I can totally see the architectural lines in her designs. Apparently her laser cut jewelry designs came about from cutting architectural model pieces! Art inspiration

I think this painting is going to be the new inspiration for my Master Bedroom.

I've definitely been planning to paint my own large scale painting for a feature wall. I'm wanting to keep the colors in the room fairly neutral with creams and black, but add a pop of Jade Green, kinda similar to this picture-

So maybe color in the art, a green throw on the bed (where do I get this?), or maybe Euro shams, and maybe some cool ceramic or glass accessories? Originally I wanted the green Mad Men style head board, but I think I'm chickening out on this! Walls I'm thinking a warm shade of grey.Window treatments like below with a tape trim-

This is actually my exact dresser-look waaaay in the back... You can't tell, but it has a black, Asian style legged base and rectangular brass pulls that probably need to be polished.

Nightstands-something custom and modern with an open bottom and drawer, painted black with a light stained wood drawer front for contrast. My Dad's friend builds furniture as a hobby, so I'm thinking I may call on his services...

Another brilliant idea from Eddie Ross

When I stumbled across this super easy, super affordable, super good looking project the other day on Eddie Ross's blog, I couldn't wait to share! I mean how awesome is this? 1. You take a bookcase- could be the Billy from Ikea, or any old bookcase you want to refurbish 2. Cut pieces of foam core the same size as the back of the shelves-maybe a little tiny bit smaller so you can get them back there 3. Find an awesome fabric and wrap around the foam core 4. Insert in the backs of the bookcase 5. Voila! To top it off, the foam core pieces are removable so you can change the fabric out with your decor!

Cheap or Chic?

Lately, I've really been thinking a lot about white, modern dining chairs. I especially love these when they are paired with the rawness of a natural wood dining table. I think it provides a great contrast of color and material. My current dining chairs have upholstered backs and seats (waiting for a great new fabric), but they are starting to feel a little traditional, even though they have a more sleek lined frame. I'm starting to lean towards a more modern look in my Dining Room and have been looking at these kinds of pics for inspiration. The thing about the plywood or plastic chairs is that they are super low maintenance, but sometimes they can feel cheap. And this is where my husband stops on his decision for these. Maybe I need to buy one and test it out in the space before I commit to all 4... What do you think?

It's normally white, but they spray painted it! How freakin clever is that?

Backyard Before and After!

I'm really excited to share my first before and after on this blog! This project is actually my own backyard. Redoing the backyard was always something we wanted to do from the moment we saw this house. We absolutely fell in love with the porch and could totally see ourselves entertaining out there (which we do frequently), but the orange paint color on the fence and porch and the patchy grass had to go! It was a lot of really hardwork, and we still have paint touch ups to do, but well worth it. I can't even describe to you how different it feels in person and has truly transformed into a very Zen space for me and my husband. So here are the Befores:

What we did:
1. Tilled the whole backyard to get rid of all the patchy grass and leftover sand from previous owner
2. Layed out metal edging for our new grass island, planted St. Augustine sod
3. Got 15,000 lbs. of med. sized pea gravel (yes you heard me!) for the dry scaping
4. Gathered a bunch of brown sandstone stepping stones from a friend's land out in Llano (for free!)
5. Powerwashed the fence and porch.
6. Painted the fence a dark chocolate brown color (Valspar "Deep Earth" flat finish, Duramax for exterior)
7. Painted the porch to match the exterior trim (semi gloss finish for exterior)
8. Painted porch floor the same as the fence.
9. Created a storage area with the left over brick and stone squares in a cool design.
10. We did ALL the work :)

And the Afters!

I do have to give credit where credit is due. My husband and I knew we wanted some type of path with a planting area around the tree, and new grass. A friend of mine, Robby Lee, who has experience in Landscaping Design, stepped in and told us how to bring our ideas to the next level by creating a grass island with a dry bed surrounding it. It really breaks up the rectilinear shape of the backyard and adds some more organic lines. I loved the idea of the rocks surround the grass because it's easy maintenance and it gives a more modern feel to the landscaping.

Things to come:

1. Plants! Especially a Red Bud tree in the empty corner.
2. Furniture and outdoor fabrics, reupholster dining chairs
3. Outdoor lighting

I am really excited to share my photos of a baby shower I had the privalage of co-hosting with two of my best friends, Kristen Tan, and Lisa Khong, for another one of my best friends, Jenny Carroll. Our theme, (thought of by the brilliant Ktan) was, "She's about to Pop!". I think the inspiration for the decor was first inspired by the fabric from the table runner I saw at Hobby Lobby of all places! I just loved the pattern and the colors. It felt girly, yet modern and fun.

Eat in Kitchens

So this idea is a little outside the box, in my opinion. Eat-in Kitchens. Ok, I guess it's not that different from an island, but the concept is cool. It seems like a great idea for houses with limited space, but enough room inside the kitchen to set a table and chairs. I've always loved the look of an old rustic dining table and rustic wood islands, so this is kinda like combining the two. I think it's an interesting idea for casual dining. Can't decide if I'd want to pull this look in my own home, but it looks good in pictures! What do you think?

Man, it's been awhile since I posted! Sorry about that, I've been busy at work which is good. After flipping through the most recent issue of Traditional Home, I was informed that Navy is the new trend color. I used to think of Navy as being kind of boring and preppy, but mixed with more modern fabrics and furniture and the right accent colors, you have yourself a pretty happenin' room! I've personally never been a fan of blue blue, but I am drawn to aqua and turquoise which is obviously a shade of blue. I also thought I never really liked Navy, but after seeing some of these pics, I may have to change my mind. I don't think I could do it in my own home, but I would love to see it in someone elses! A friend of mine is planning to incorporate Navy in her interiors and specifically her Kitchen cabinets. I can't wait to see the finished product! I think it will look great contrasting with her warm wood counters. I am especially drawn to the Navy interiors that have shades of orange and rust as the accent colors. It's such a warm contrast and really help evoke a more earthy vibe.

I'm so excited about my new purchase that I just have to share! While doing my routine stop by at Next to New on Burnet, I found this modern rustic dining table for less than $100! This table is transitional in style and can be used indoors or out, and with a glass, stone, or wood top at variable sizes- so many possibilities! I am going to use it outside on my covered porch with those bronze painted bamboo chairs I blogged about a few months ago here. SSOOOO much better than the unoriginal table I was looking at buying from Target :) Just goes to show you that with a little patience you can stumble across a gem!

Kind of reminds me of this, only with a more rustic appeal...

Jewelry hanger: Part Deaux

I just wanted to share another jewelry hanger that I made for my sister in law for Christmas. She saw my blog post here about the one I did for myself, and requested one herself! Of course I was honored to make one for her and I decided to fancy hers up a bit with some cute hardware from Anthropologie. If you didn't know, Anthropologie has really cute cabinet and door hardware for the home. It's a little pricey, but worth the money for a unique look. I decided to do Ashley's jewelry hanger in neutrals so that it could go with any decor. I was also excited to use the ever so trendy Chevron pattern on the background. I just love being crafty sometimes! So theraputic :)

Fabulous Finds!

I just wanted to share a consignment store that I pop into a few times a month to check out their treasures. I think this place has great stuff and good prices. They price their items at a starting amount, and then the longer it's there, the price goes down. I have been known to go back in a few days later when the price goes down to get the bargain. Each piece has a tag that tells you the dates that the prices will change. It's a gamble though because if the item is really great, you run the risk of someone else buying before the price goes down. "Ok great, so what's the store?" you're asking. Well I'll tell you. It's Next to New and it's on Burnet. Doesn't look like much does it?

I love it though and I've found lots of great things here! So here are some rad chairs from Design Within Reach- they were there yesterday so if you like them... Get your butt over there! They were $175 for 4 chairs which= $43.75 a chair!! You can't beat that with a stick for good style!

I would consider buying these if I already didn't have a bigillion chairs in my garage waiting for work!

Here are some other things I have found in the past that I thought were cool:

The mirror- not the scarecrow! I think this would be such a cool accent for a Powder Room- esp. if it had some funky wallpaper!

There was also this mirror I considered buying and painting black for over our bedroom dresser, but I didn't think Merrick would like it.

And this buffet I thought could be a great accent piece painted in another color- the inserts in the top were stone, and I loved the Asian inspired hadware on the doors!

Right around Christmas I was perusing through Ebay and found these super cute Dhurrie rugs for cheapo. Looks like they're around 4 x 6. This bathroom is awesome. In my opinion. I found it on Canadian House and Home and had to post. They say the tile backsplash is cork penny tiles... Interesting. Love pretty much everything down to the baskets- how cute are those? Frosted glass panel hiding the toilet- not so much... it's short enough to just look silly.

My Thanksgiving Table!!

I know it's almost Christmas people, but I'm excited to post pictures of my very FIRST Thanksgiving tabletop! A couple of posts ago, I gave you a sneak peek into a couple of things I was doing, but here is the finished product! I have to say I forgot to add the glasses for these pictures, but they were pretty too- I mean when else can you use your crystal?

Cool Cabinets

Since I'm also in the process of painting our Kitchen cabinets, I've really been noticing other Kitchen pictures with painted cabinets. If the situation allowed in our house, I would love to do this...

I love how the doors are a darker, different color from the face frames. What also works about this look is the light color countertops, completing the white frame around the dark cabinet doors. I'm also totally loving the Persian rug! I really need one of these. BAD. Note: the reason I don't think this will work in our house is because A) Our Kitchen is A LOT smaller than this B) Our cabinet doors are overlay instead of inset or European C) I don't have white walls D) I have upper cabinets. E) my countertops aren't white

I think the best thing for us to is be consistent with the color to make our Kitchen appear larger. Too many color and materials in our small kitchen would make too many visual distractions. Comprende?

Why Ikea Kitchens are GOOD

So I stumbled across a designer's blog, "Creed" the other day, and I have to say I'm impressed. And excited. Now here is a designer that can call herself a "designer". First of all, I was blown away by the space planning on one of her current projects and then I was even more blown away by her blog post on why she loves Ikea Kitchens. I've always been curious about Ikea kitchens, knowing they're affordable, but not knowing what the quality was like. I think I always assumed it was on the cheaper side like their furniture, but designer Carol Reed explains the many benefits of installing a kitchen from Ikea. Apparently, for melamine cabinets, the quality is great and one of the things I like best is that you are saving money on the cabinets so you can spend more money on materials like countertops, backsplashes, and appliances. You MUST read her post about this because it's super informative! Here are some pictures from her blog that show how you can customize Ikea Kitchen components for an unfitted and designer look.

Just wanted to give you a heads up about an AWESOME event happening in Big D if you live there or are going to be there on November 17th.It's the 19th Annual Candlelight Walk on Henderson Ave. and it's from 6-9 pm. The Knox-Henderson area is one of my favorites to visit when I'm in Dallas because of all the great vintage shops. The Candlelight Walk is a celebration to start of the holiday season where many retailers participate in showing off their fabulous merchandise at discounted prices! Let me also mention that it offers tasty culinary treats, drinks, and music! Why wouldn't you want to go to this? One of the participants definitely worth mentioning is my friend Carrie's shop, Art is Art Consignments which sells really great vintage finds and local art. DIY Jewelry Storage

Remember my post from awhile back about jewelry storage? If not, click here. Well, I decided to try one of the more easy (and inexpensive) solutions for necklaces- the board with hooks, except that I wanted to do something a little more creative than just a plain board. I decided to make my own stencil and stencil a pattern onto the board. My inspiration was a Moroccan style design that I printed off the internet, traced onto the stencil plastic, and then transfered to the board. Here is what I did:

1. Get your board on- I bought a generic Pine 1 x 6 from Home Depot, sanded it, and painted it a creamy white. The boards are pretty long, but you can get cut there or do it at home.

2. Stencil- Find a pattern you like from wherever. I found mine online in Google images when I searched for "Moroccan patterns". After printing, I knew that I wanted it to be a certain size for the board so I enlarged to the size I wanted on my HP copier/scanner. I then traced the pattern onto the stencil plastic which you can get at Hobby Lobby or most craft stores.

Next, cut out the pattern on the stencil plastic with an Exacto knife. This is really the hardest part of the whole process depending on the pattern you choose. Be patient as it's very tedious!

3. It's time to paint- Now you are ready to tape the stencil onto the board and paint on the design! I did a couple of pieces on one side of the stencil to keep it flat and so that I could easily remove and slide down the board. Use a small sponge or stencil brush to apply paint to open areas of stencil. Make sure you don't apply too much paint or it can seep under the plastic and mess up the design. After using the sponge, I may consider the brush next time for ease of control and texture of the paint. Be sure to let the area dry completely before removing the stencil.

4. Seal and apply hooks- I personally wanted to protect the paint from chipping and I wanted a slight sheen, so I sealed the board with Polyurthane after it was completely dry. After that was dry, I screwed in the hooks and nailed the picture hangers on the back. You are ready to go!

Women on a Mission....

Here it is! I'm smiling as I write it... Our girl trip to Warrenton, TX for Antique Week!!! I can't stress enough what a blast I had with my friends Jenny and Lisa. We were women on a mission!!

This isn't ours, but isn't is fantastic?!

Our drive into Warrenton consisted of me being a little frazzled driving the trailer because it was my first time all by myself! (Without my husband) The drive was beautiful and our campground was awesome! Lisa did such a great job finding it! After a small scare with our electricity not working and finding out that the sites didn't have a grill (our only planned form of cooking), we ended up at the Park Host spot which was covered and situated between 2 groups of awesome older ladies doing the same thing we were, and a portable grill found in the shelter area. We proceed to eat some gourmet chicken and mushrooms and cantaloupe wrapped in prociutto. I can't forget to mention the yummy cheese that tastes like BUTTA! And the chocolate loaf cake our neighbors brought over-DIVINE. Thanks again Chef Lisa! We proceeded to Warrenton the next morning to scour the fields for prizes, but you'll have to wait for the next post to see what we found...

This looks to me like it has coordinating pieces for a sectional, which is something I would love to have out there. For those of you who have seen our porch it's painted an awful orange shade now, but we want to paint the floors a dark chocolate and the rest a creamy white. It will totally brighten it up and give it a more updated look. I think any of these pieces could work, but which would you choose? I am still in need of a 36" round dining table to go with these great chairs...

I had the opportunity to help my little sister with the styling and flower arrangements for her wedding reception in Arlington. She and her husband were actually married in Jamaica, but had a celebration when they came back with all their friends and family. It was a lot of work and a lot of FUN! I saw this console picture today and it is going to be great inspiration for our Master Bedroom dresser. I love the black paint, brass hardware, yellow orchids and all the STUFF on top. I'm wanting to bring some black into my bedroom, and for those of you who haven't seen it, my dresser has black feet and brass hardware, and my lamps have black bases with black trim on the fabric shades. I definately want a unique and textural mirror to go above the dresser (in black), but haven't found one yet. (This was supposed to be the honeycomb mirrror I blogged about from Tuesday Morning, but failed to buy). I doubt I will seriously put this much stuff on the dresser, but styling it out some is appealing. I even love the candle sconces which would require no electrical work. I'm also thinking about the nightstands being black with the adddition of some cool hardware from Anthropologie. So exciting!!

Designer Spotlight: Palmer Weiss

I just discovered interior designer Palmer Weiss through Delight by Design blog. I really love her chic, feminine interiors and her combination of new and vintage furniture. So inspiring...

I really love the texture that the dining chairs add to the room. I also love how they contrast with the dark walls which look to be wallpapered in some type of grasscloth. I also like how the gold is repeated in the mirror, light fixture, and curtains. I like everything about this room, really!

I love the tile detail on the fireplace-very clever! Also the unexpected placement of the pendant fixtures over the chair.

She has such a great balance of color, pattern, and texture in all her interiors!

The hardware on the dresser is great! Where does she find this stuff??

I want a banquette!

I'm sure you've seen pictures of Dining Rooms with banquette seating in addition to regular chair seating- if not here's some... I really want one. Bad. It has to be upholstered, it has to have classic form and more on the modern side, and it has to have a higher back height. I would love to find one for less than $500. That may just be near impossible. Maybe one day I'll come across one, or maybe I should have one built? Any ideas?

BBuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrr! I've seen a rarity in A-Tx today- SNOW! As I was driving into work this morning I couldn't help but notice all the people standing out on the streets downtown taking photographs of this momentous occasion. So funny- like they've never seen snow before, and maybe they haven't- it is Austin ;) Here's a little fire for your freeze...

I just discovered the paintings of local Austin artist Chuck Voelter at Kenichi sushi the other day at lunch. Chuck is an artist/film production manager/designer. Originally born in Temple, TX but currently residing here in A-Town. I immediately loved the abstract shapes and texture of his work. What was really interesting to me was the way he combines oil paint and polyurthane to make a cavas consisting of matte and shiny. You obviously can't tell from these photos, but I encourage you to check out his work on display at Kenichi right now. From a matter of food, they have great bento boxes serving lots of good food for a good price!

I just discovered the talented Kishani Perera and her beautifully hip interiors! I love her bold use of color and texture combined with vintage and natural elements to give an overall hip and aesthetic space! I just love discovering designer role models for my own personal style.

In light of the upcoming Valentine's Day, I thought it would be fun to post pictures of pink rooms, but primarily those with Fuschia or Magenta tones instead of your soft pastel pink. I really love the freshness and fun that these spaces evoke, although I don't think I could do it in my own home. What do you think? Is there power in Pink?

I don't know what it is about this bedroom that I like- maybe the dark grey walls with all the differnet pops of color and texture, or maybe it's the bohemian flair. All I know is I would like to curl up in the bed and take a nap. This weather is soooooo dreary!

WHY ARE BUDGET FRIENDLY NIGHTSTANDS SO SMALL? Seriously, they're short and small in width. I'm a huge fan of larger nightstands, one because they are better in scale to a large bed, and two, if they are tall enough your lamps show off better and you don't spill the water next to your bed.

I would love this! Drawers, book storage, and all! Also vintage which makes me smile :)

I recently learned of a design company called Massacco Warner Miller that consists of not one, but 3 talented visionaries- Julie Massacco, Melissa Warner, and Carrie Miller. They felt that after working together on previous projects they would join together forces as they would have greater impact as a team. They have offices in Los Angelos, San Francisco, and Seattle. Their design is modern ranging from more elegant and classic to bold and colorful. You can check out more of their work here.

I really like it when architects or designers throw in the extra little surprise factor in the millwork or architectural details that is either super aesthetic, original, or functional, and leaves you saying, "Wow, now that's neat!"

This is no ordinary archway into the dining area- this Moroccan detail gives a more whimsical approach to an otherwise traditional archway.

What a creative approach to a door- this adds storage and creates architectural interest in the room while still functioning as a door

At first this was hard for me to tell what was going on, but the double doors in between the countertops lead to a pantry beyond

How cute is this reading nook/day bed? I love the side millwork details of the bed and the octagonal shape of the opening above.

The door of this closet also functions as shoe storage! Also love the mirrored fronts to the island.

Wouldn't we all love to have a closet this chic!

I really like how the fireplace mantle is continuous with the adjacent bookshelf.

I like the non-traditional design of this bookshelf and how the shelves don't go all the way to the end of the frame. Very cool Phoebe Howard...
